Appleby-in-Westmorland is an attractive historic market town situated in a meander of the River Eden. For several centuries, Appleby was the county town of Westmorland before the creation of the new county of Cumbria in 1974.
The tree-lined main street, Boroughgate, is marked at each end by the High and Low Crosses. At one end is Appleby Castle, now in private hands, and at the other the beautiful church of St Lawrence. The Moot Hall in the centre of the town houses the Tourist Information Centre.
Appleby station, a few minutes walk from the town centre, is on the spectacular Settle Carlisle railway line giving easy access to the Yorkshire Dales. We have enjoyed walking the Three Peaks from Horton-in-Ribblesdale or Ribblehead stations.
The traditional Appleby Fair, one of Europe’s largest horse fairs, takes place annually in early June and is held in a field known as Fair Hill, one mile north of the town centre.
The nearby 18-hole Appleby
Golf Course enjoys a superb
location with the Pennines as a backdrop to the course on Brackenber
Moor. It is a just a good tee shot from Bank End House!
The Eden Valley is an outstanding area for walking. Local walks are described
in an excellent series of publications “Discover Eden”, available
at Bank End House. We are keen fellwalkers and can advise on routes
in the nearby Lake District Hills, the Howgill Fells and the North Pennines. High Cup Nick is in prominent view to the rear of the house with the
Pennine Way descending through it to Dufton. We can collect or take long-distance
walkers by arrangement to convenient stopping points.
Appleby is on the North Pennine cycleway and many of the quiet country roads are part of the cycle network. We can offer safe cycle storage and clothes drying facilities.
We have just been approved by Visit Britain after meeting the criteria
of their “Cyclists Welcome” and “Walkers Welcome” schemes.
